The European audiovisual sector is taking a decisive step forward with the launch of a new project titled “Social dialogue enhancing the green transition in the European audiovisual sector (Green AV)”, dedicated to supporting the sustainable transition of the audiovisual industry through enhanced social dialogue and collaborative action among key stakeholders. Building on the successful completion of a first initiative in 2021-2023, this continuation project brings together leading European social partners to address the evolving challenges and opportunities of the green transition.

Continuing a Proven Partnership

Green AV is the direct continuation of a groundbreaking first project that established the foundations for cooperation among European social partners in the audiovisual sector for the green transition. That earlier initiative resulted in the creation of the Green Toolkit Film & TV, rebranded into GreenDialogue Audiovisual, a comprehensive web-based database of resources and best practices for sustainable production. The continued dialogue among project partners following the conclusion of the first project revealed critical gaps and new opportunities that this new phase is designed to address.

“The success of our initial collaboration demonstrated the power of bringing together employer and worker organisations with industry experts and policymakers,” explains the project partnership. “This new phase expands on that foundation to tackle more aspects of the green transition.”

Project Partners and Governance

Green AV is coordinated by UNI Europa (Trade Union organisation) and CEPI (employer organisation) with core partners including EBU, FIAPF, FIA, and FIM, supported by their national affiliates across the European Union. The project operates through a structured governance model featuring a Project Steering Group composed of representatives from all participating organisations and sector experts, meeting regularly to guide implementation and validate deliverables. The Project Secretariat, led jointly by CEPI and UNI Europa, ensures coordinated project management across all activities. The project is also supported by an advisory committee composed of sector experts nominated by partner organisations and from the employer side by a dedicated working group on sustainability formed by CEPI members.

Four Strategic Objectives

The project partners have identified four specific objectives to advance the green transition:

Objective 1 focuses on evaluating the impact of transition goals across the entire production value chain and individual departments, while disseminating best practices for adapting work organisation and occupations to sustainability requirements.

Objective 2 addresses emerging skills requirements and new occupations that support sustainable employment and production, promoting the recognition of new competences and training programmes to enable career mobility across the sector.

Objective 3 aims to develop and promote tools that enhance cooperation among social partners, facilitating structured dialogue and collective bargaining on green transition issues at European and national levels.

Objective 4 engages EU policymakers to advance policies, public support, and investments that drive the sector’s sustainable transition, ensuring that policy frameworks and support instruments align with industry and worker needs.

Planned Activities and Deliverables

Over its 24-month implementation period, Green AV will pursue these objectives through four interconnected work streams:

Capacity Building: Two hybrid workshops will bring together up to 40 in-presence participants from European and national social partners, educational institutions, and sector experts. The first workshop will explore emerging training needs and occupations while highlighting social dialogue’s role in green transformation. The second workshop will focus on lessons learned and experience-sharing. Additionally, a webinar will reach 70-100 participants from national member organisations across the audiovisual sector.

Resource Development: The Green Toolkit Film & TV will be substantially updated and expanded with new resources and tools collected from across Europe. Website content will be enhanced with new articles, case studies, and integrated visuals to reflect the latest developments in sustainable audiovisual production.

Social Dialogue: Regular working group meetings will strengthen cooperation among EU audiovisual sector social partners, promoting collective bargaining and policy solutions focused on green transition challenges.

Dissemination and Communication: A series of campaign materials—including leaflets, long and short-form videos, and social media visuals—will communicate project findings and expand awareness of sustainable production practices. A final conference will present project outputs to industry stakeholders and EU institutions, fostering broader dialogue on EU support for the sector’s transition.

Looking Ahead

Through this comprehensive approach combining research, capacity building, dialogue, and communication, Green AV aims to amplify good practices, develop a joint skills development strategy, and promote solutions that advance the sector’s sustainable transformation. As the audiovisual industry faces mounting environmental pressures and shifting workforce requirements, this project demonstrates the European social partners’ commitment to ensuring that the transition to sustainability is managed through effective social dialogue, equitable for workers, and competitive for companies across the EU.
