The “Guidelines for sustainable Filming” by the Slovak Film Commission aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, use resources more efficiently, and protect the environment and human health in the audiovisual industry. “The Green Platform of the Slovak Film Commission is a platform that aims to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly film production. It provides resources such as a Green Call, Green Guide, Green Database, and a Carbon Calculator to help film professionals reduce waste, use resources efficiently, and protect the environment and human health. The platform also offers information and support for preparing and creating audiovisual works ecologically and effectively. The ultimate goal is to develop an effective ecological strategy for the audiovisual sector in Slovakia, including training environmental consultants, developing a carbon calculator, and creating a financial bonus system for ecologically engaged productions. The platform was created in 2018 with the support of Slovak film professionals and the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, as well as the Slovak Institute for Circular Economy. The Green Platform aims to empower the audiovisual industry to take meaningful steps towards sustainability and reducing its impact on the environment. “

The Open Course “Sustainable Management of Audiovisual Production – Green Consultants” is organized by a Lisbon university and aims to train professionals in the film/TV industry to become Green Consultants. The course provides knowledge and experience in sustainability management systems for audiovisual processes, from script to launch, with a focus on optimizing resources and reducing carbon footprint. The course requires previous professional experience in the audiovisual industry and basic knowledge of environmental management systems. The course covers topics such as sustainability guidelines for audiovisual production, identifying areas of action, calculating CO2, implementing corrective measures, and preparing project reports.

NRK’s Climate and Environmental Report 2020 is a comprehensive document that details the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation’s efforts and progress in promoting sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. The report covers a wide range of topics, including energy consumption, waste management, travel, and production methods, and provides detailed data on the corporation’s performance in each area. The report also highlights the measures taken by NRK to reduce its carbon footprint, such as using renewable energy sources, promoting green travel, and implementing sustainable production practices. Additionally, the report outlines NRK’s plans for the future and its commitment to continuing to work towards a more sustainable future.

The Virke Norwegian Producers Association, along with other associations in the Norwegian culture sector, have created a roadmap/guide to reduce the climate footprint in the arts and culture sector. The roadmap provides an overall status, sets specific goals, and proposes measures to achieve sustainability. It includes 10 immediate measures for organizations and businesses, 5 for artists and culture workers, and 5 for the Government/Authorities. The roadmap was developed through a kick-off conference in January 2020 and was launched in a webinar in March 2021, with a follow-up conference planned in early 2022. The immediate measures proposed are designed to quickly yield effective changes for a more sustainable future.

The Green Producers Club provides its members with access to the Green Producers Tool, a research-based climate tool that measures and help reducing emissions in the culture and creative industries. Their goal is to achieve a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030 in alignment with the Paris Agreement. The tool is designed for producers or buyers of cultural productions, and suppliers in the culture sector’s value chains. It currently has three modules for measuring emissions in film & TV, festivals, and events, with a stage and theatre module launching in August 2023. The tool is dynamic and updated based on user input, technological advancements, and scientific developments.

Green Film Making is a Dutch platform created by the Sustainability Manager Els Rientjes, aimed at inspiring and facilitating sustainable film production. The platform offers a toolkit with specific guides for each department, useful international contacts, instructional videos, calculators, and resources for sustainable production. The Sustainability Manager also provides consultancy services to help filmmakers design sustainable productions. Green Film Making organizes various projects throughout the year, including workshops, festival screenings, debates, and collaborations to encourage sustainable practices in the film industry.

Cinema Sostenibile is a platform created by the Association Dire Fare Cambiare APS, dedicated to the topic of sustainable filmmaking. The project was born as a natural consequence of the Manifesto for Common and Sustainable Culture launched in 2020 and signed by numerous artists, organizations, cultural and social spaces and associations. The film industry, like any other, has a significant environmental impact. In Italy, there is an increasing culture focused on sustainable and responsible production, which provides considerable benefits for those who choose to change course. The platform serves all professionals in the film industry interested in this topic and is the first step towards a green revolution.

The SARDEGNA Green Film Shooting guide aims to help filmmakers and production companies adopt practical and simple solutions to limit the environmental impact of sets and save economic resources, while also sharing an innovative and respectful model of development in line with the European Union’s 2020 strategy to address global climate change. The guide offers practical measures for any production company to implement, even with small budgets, and utilize smart strategies to optimize available resources. The Sardegna Film Commission Foundation has been committed to promoting green productions on the island and communicating the importance of a cinema-audiovisual-telecommunications chain that is increasingly sustainable from an environmental, social, and economic point of view.

The EcoMuvi certification ensures transparent management of public and private funding by requiring independent and certified reporting. The protocol evaluates and certifies the sustainability performance of audiovisual sets in pre-production, shooting, and post-production phases, with a streamlined workflow for agile projects. EcoMuvi is applicable to various types of audiovisual projects in Italy and abroad. The evaluation system is based on a scale of unsatisfactory, satisfactory, highly satisfactory, and not applicable. The PEF System groups all actions by macro-thematic categories, such as management systems, resource management, waste management, energy consumption, and GHG emissions. The certification body assigns a classic logo (25%-79% PEF achieved) or an excellence logo (80%-100% PEF achieved) based on the project’s performance rate.

The Green Film Lab is a training program organized by TorinoFilmLab with the aim of promoting environmentally sustainable practices in film production. It offers 3-day workshops in different European regions for film professionals and sustainability managers to learn how to apply best practices in areas such as energy-saving, transportation, catering, and waste management. The program uses a project-based approach and includes a sustainability plan and certification process for audiovisual projects. The workshops are led by experienced sustainability manager tutors and are open to up to 24 participants. The program is supported by Creative Europe – MEDIA Sub-programme of the European Union.

Green Film Certification is an international program that recognizes and certifies environmentally responsible film and television productions. Developed by the Trentino Film Commission in Italy, the certification is based on a point system that awards points for sustainable practices in various areas. Productions that meet the minimum requirements receive a certificate and can use the Green Film Certification logo. The program aims to promote sustainability in the industry and raise awareness of the environmental impact of film production. The process involves downloading and reading the Rating System, completing a checklist of environmental sustainability criteria, committing to those criteria during shooting, and undergoing an evaluation by an independent verifying body. Positive evaluations result in certification for the film.
